About
The Cultural Heritage Agency is the specially authorised state body for tangible heritage, museums, archaeology and the export and import of cultural valuables. Created in 2021 under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, it became a separate independent agency under Decree PF-14 of 25 January 2023.
The agency records and protects the UNESCO sites of Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva and Shakhrisabz and more than 8,000 monuments nationwide, commissions restoration work and runs the state museums and museum-reserves. Important for travellers: taking antiques, manuscripts and works of art out of the country requires a permit from the agency.
The agency is located on Taras Shevchenko Street in Tashkent; regional heritage departments operate across the country.
