About

The Senate is the upper house of the Oliy Majlis, representing the regions. It was created in 2005 when Uzbekistan moved to a bicameral parliament. Senators are elected in equal numbers from Karakalpakstan, the regions and Tashkent City, with some appointed by the President.

The Senate reviews and approves laws passed by the Legislative Chamber, confirms judges of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts, the Prosecutor General and the chairman of the Central Bank, ratifies international treaties and exercises parliamentary oversight of the government and agencies. The Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) and the Children’s Ombudsman work under the Senate.

Separate phone lines are provided for citizens’ appeals; the Senate building is on Islam Karimov Street in Tashkent.

Phone numbers and hours can change — call ahead before you visit.
