A million-hectare national park created in 2022 on former Vozrozhdeniya Island in the South Aral, to protect the new landscape of the dried seabed and fight desertification.
Aralkum National Nature Park was established in 2022 and covers one million hectares, 585,000 of them a protection zone. It lies on the dried bed of the Aral Sea, on the former Vozrozhdeniya Island, which joined the mainland in 2001 as the water retreated; in Soviet times, until 1992, the island housed a military biological laboratory. Work here now focuses on studying the plant and animal communities forming on the Aralkum, planting desert vegetation and reducing salt and dust storms.
