The landscape

Urtachekuv is a chain of sharp rock peaks rising from the Forish steppe in the north-eastern foothills of the Nuratau. Just over ten kilometres long, this miniature mountain land can be explored on foot in a day, gorge by gorge.

The villages of Qoratosh, Nurak and Ana-Muna ring the rocks; people live in traditional houses, herd sheep and goats and bake bread in tandoors. Ana-Muna has a small local museum, and the Khoja Bogbon Ota shrine is close by. Some 50 km short of the district centre you leave the main road for a dirt track.
