An Orthodox monastery in Chirchiq, founded in 1996 around the Church of St George, consecrated in 1900.
The story begins in the late 19th century in the village of Troitskoye, which grew into today’s Chirchiq. In February 1897 a prayer house dedicated to St George was consecrated here, and the building still stands. The engineer Wilhelm Heinzelmann designed the church in 1897, the foundation stone was laid in September 1898, and the church was consecrated on 23 November 1900. The local Muslim community made a substantial contribution to its construction.
In 1931 the church was closed and turned into a stable, and its bell tower was demolished. It was returned to believers in 1945, and on 22 February 1996 the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church opened a monastery for men around it.
