About the site

Ming Uryuk — 'a thousand apricot trees' — lies near the central railway station and the Salar canal. Historians identify it as the ruins of Madinat Chach, the capital of the ancient state of Chach. Excavations show the town existed from the 1st century AD until the Arab conquest in the 8th century, with the earliest finds dating to the 1st century BC.

Chach lay within the cultural orbit of Sogdiana and Bactria and later the Turkic Khaganate, and Sogdian was its official language. Reconstructions suggest a walled town over 4 km around, with a four-towered citadel about 23 metres high.
