About the museum

In 1988, to mark the centenary of the Central Asian Railway, locomotives were put on show at Tashkent's main passenger station. The display proved so popular that it was kept, and the museum opened on Railway Workers' Day, 4 August 1989.

The open-air yard holds 13 steam locomotives, 17 diesels, 3 electric locomotives, 10 carriages and 20th-century maintenance machinery. Three carriages house displays on the history of the Central Asian Railway, signalling and safety equipment and old railway uniforms, and a 750 mm narrow-gauge line runs Oriental-style open carriages around the grounds.
