Nature · Sherobod District
A reserve in two separate parts, the eastern slopes of the Kohitang range and Aral-Paygambar island in the Amu Darya. Created in 1986, it protects 810 plant species.
The Surkhan reserve was created in 1986 by merging the Aral-Paygambar reserve, founded in 1971, with the Kohitang wildlife refuge. The Kohitang section (24,583 ha) lies at 850–3,157 m, with Turkestan and Zarafshan juniper, Turkestan maple, Bukhara almond and pistachio; 810 plant species have been recorded, 29 of them in the Red Book. Wildlife includes markhor, urial, Turkestan lynx and around 130 bird species, and the Zarautsoy rock paintings lie within the area. The Aral-Paygambar section (3,044 ha) of riverine tugai woodland was set up to protect the Bukhara deer.
