The regional capital, Bukhara, is a city with 2,500 years of history, once capital of the Samanids and the Bukharan khans, whose old town is on the UNESCO list.
Bukhara is one of Uzbekistan's oldest cities, and its 2,500th anniversary was celebrated in 1997. In the 9th and 10th centuries it was the Samanid capital, later the capital of the Bukhara Khanate and Emirate, and in 1920–1924 the centre of the Bukharan People's Soviet Republic. It was the birthplace of Imam al-Bukhari and the city where Ibn Sina spent his youth.
The Historic Centre of Bukhara was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. The Ark, Po-i-Kalyan, Lyab-i Hauz, the Samanid Mausoleum, the trading domes, Chor Minor and hundreds of other monuments survive among neighbourhoods of narrow lanes. On 1 January 2026 the city had 304,700 residents; it is divided into the Fayzulla Khodjaev and Textile districts. The city lies on the lower Zarafshan at about 225 m above sea level.
