Mosque · Bukhara city
A first-half-16th-century ensemble of mosque-khanqah and pool, whose hall is covered from floor to the crown of the dome in gilded kundal painting.
The complex was built by Khoja Zaynuddin, whose grave lies in a deep niche in the west facade beneath tug poles, the standards that mark saints' tombs. The 30.4 × 18.8 m building, 16.6 m high, combines a prayer hall, the founder's tomb, a school and cells for pilgrims, and stands on a brick platform. An iwan on wooden columns with muqarnas capitals runs along the north and south facades.
Inside, mosaic panels line the lower walls, while the upper walls, mihrab, arches and dome are covered in gilded floral painting in the kundal technique. During repairs in 1913, ordered by the last emir, Alim Khan, the pool's old spillway was replaced in new marble.
