Tim of Abdullah Khan

Built in 1577, the Tim of Abdullah Khan differs from the other trading domes in being a fully enclosed hall with gates. Textiles and carpets have been sold here for centuries.

History and layout

The tim was built during the nominal reign of Iskander Khan, when Abdullah Khan II held real power. Tim is Persian for an enclosed public building: unlike the domes over street crossings, this is a self-contained market hall that could be locked. Silk, wool, cotton and linen fabrics were sold here, along with Bukhara carpets and rugs brought from Khiva, Kokand, Iran and Afghanistan.

Shops ring the hall beneath its central dome, and carpets, fabrics and souvenirs still dominate today.
