Ark of Bukhara
Seat of Bukhara's rulers for over a thousand years
Modern · Bukhara city
A hyperboloid steel water tower built in 1927–1929 to a design by the engineer Vladimir Shukhov. Since 2019 it has been the Bukhara Tower, with a viewing platform and cafés.
The tower was put up on the Registan opposite the Ark to supply the city with water. In 1968 the wooden cladding at the top burned and the tank was damaged, after which it fell out of use and was abandoned. In the 1990s a local businessman added a lift and opened a restaurant at the top, which closed when the lift broke down.
Restored with French investment, it reopened on 24 March 2019 as the Bukhara Tower. It now has a glass lift, a paid viewing platform with binoculars at the top, cafés and restaurants, and a tourist information centre with a small museum.
