district · Bukhara Region
The region's most populous district, Gijduvan is known for the shrine of Abdulkhaliq Gijduvani, an Ulugh Beg madrasa and a famous pottery school.
Gijduvan District lies on the north-eastern edge of the region, bordering Navoiy Region, and was created in 1926. Gijduvan appears in sources from the 10th century and won renown through the 12th-century Sufi Abdulkhaliq Gijduvani. In 1512 a Shaybanid army defeated the Safavids here. Gijduvan has had town status since 1972.
The district has 20 archaeological and 27 architectural monuments, the best known being the Abdulkhaliq Gijduvani complex and the Ulugh Beg Madrasa of 1433. Gijduvan pottery is famous nationwide, and the writer Sadriddin Ayni (1878–1954) was born in the district. In 2018 some 106.51 km², including the settlement of Zafarobod, were transferred to Konimex District in Navoiy Region. On 1 January 2026 the district had 331,900 residents — more than any other in the region.
