Konimex District
Konimex District in the west of the region is mostly Kyzylkum sand and pasture — vast in area and sparsely populated.
About the district
Konimex District was set up in 1925 as a Kazakh-Karakalpak district, abolished in 1962 and restored in 1965. It borders Navbahor to the east, Nurota to the north-east, Tomdi and Uchquduq to the west and Qiziltepa to the south, as well as Gijduvan and Peshku districts of Bukhara Region. Its centre is the settlement of Konimex, about 28 km north-west of Navoiy.
The land is mostly flat and sandy, merging with the Kyzylkum in the north-east and the Zarafshan valley in the south, where the Qaraqota depression lies. The eastern spurs of the Auminzatau mountains rise in the west, and the climate is dry and sharply continental, with July averaging 32–33 °C. In 2018 the district received 106.51 km² from Bukhara Region's Gijduvan District, including the settlement of Zafarobod. It has the Konimex ecopark. On 1 January 2026 it had 36,900 residents, and its official area is 15,960 km² (2026).
