About the district

Karmana was one of Central Asia's well-known medieval towns; the 10th-century historian Narshakhi called it the home of many writers and poets. The Khwarazm-shah Il-Arslan destroyed it in the 12th century, but it recovered and was a major town again by the 15th. From the 16th century it was the seat of the Karmana beylik, and Emir Abdulahad Khan spent most of his time here and is buried here.

The district was formed in the 1920s as Kermine District, renamed Navoiy District in 1958 and Karmana again in 2003, when its centre moved to Karmana. Four of its monuments — Rabati Malik and its sardoba, the Qosim Sheikh complex, the Mir Said Bahrom Mausoleum and the Deggaron Mosque — have been part of a UNESCO site since 2023. Navoiy International Airport is also in the district. On 1 January 2026 it had 144,700 residents.
