About the district

Tomdi District was formed on 3 July 1927 within the Karakalpak Autonomous Oblast, later passed to Bukhara Region and, from 1982, to Navoiy Region. It borders Kazakhstan to the north and east, Uchquduq to the west, Konimex to the south-west, and Nurota District and Jizzakh Region across Aydarkul to the south-east. Desert and steppe cover almost all of it. Its centre is the village of Tomdibuloq, more than 190 km north of Navoiy.

The district holds Muruntau, one of the world's largest gold deposits, discovered in 1958 and mined commercially since 1969. The Tamdytau mountains, the Oqtogʻ-Tomdi state reserve and the yurt camps near the western end of Aydarkul are also here. The collection of the Jubay Balimanov house-museum in Tomdi was transferred to the regional museum in 2017. On 1 January 2026 the district had 15,200 residents, the fewest in the region.
