About the district

Navbahor District was created in 1980, merged into Navoiy District in 1988 and restored in the early 1990s (sources give 1990 or 1992). It stretches along the north-east bank of the Zarafshan between the Karatau and the river, bordering Samarkand Region's Paxtachi District to the east, Konimex District and Bukhara Region to the west and Karmana District to the south. Its centre is the settlement of Beshrabot, about 17 km north-west of Navoiy.

The district's best-known site is the Sarmishsay gorge at the foot of the Karatau, with more than 5,000 rock carvings; since 2004 it has been a museum-reserve and it is on UNESCO's Tentative List. Most people work in farming, and the district's urban-type settlements include Ijant, Qalqonota, Keskanterak, Quyi Beshrabot and Saroy. On 1 January 2026 the district had 124,100 residents.
