The regional capital, Navoiy, was founded in 1958 alongside a mining and metallurgical plant and named after the poet Alisher Navoiy.

About the city
Navoiy was founded in 1958 at the same time as a mining and metallurgical plant near Karmana and named after the great poet Alisher Navoiy. In the 1960s it was built to a single master plan by Leningrad architects, who received the USSR State Prize for it in 1969. It stands on the Zarafshan River at the south-western edge of the Kyzylkum, 347 m above sea level and 509 km from Tashkent. Its chief builder was Z. P. Zarapetyan.
Until 1982 Navoiy belonged to Bukhara Region. Today the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Company, Navoiyazot and other large plants operate here, and a new satellite town, New Navoiy, is being built nearby. On 1 January 2026 the city had 171,300 residents. It makes a convenient base for Karmana's monuments, Rabati Malik, Sarmishsay and Nurota.
