Gʻozgʻon city

Gʻozgʻon, 17 km west of Nurota, grew up around a marble quarry whose stone adorns a Tashkent theatre and metro stations, and keeps a stone-carving tradition handed down through generations.

About the city

Gʻozgʻon appeared in the 1930s beside a marble quarry, became an urban-type settlement in 1975 and was granted town status in 2019–2020 (sources differ). It stands by an ancient mound of the same name, 17 km west of Nurota, with the nearest railway station at Navoiy, 76 km away. On 1 January 2026 it had 9,500 residents.

Gʻozgʻon marble is prized for its decorative qualities and was used for the Alisher Navoiy Grand Theatre in Tashkent and stations of the Moscow Metro — and, according to Uzbek sources, in the Tashkent, St Petersburg and Kyiv metros too. Stone carving thrives here, and the stone-carver and architect Abdurahim Gʻozgʻoniy, who built Emir Abdulahad Khan's tomb and the Mirzachorbogʻ residence, came from the town.
