The village where the great physician was born
district · Bukhara Region
Peshku District north of Bukhara contains Afshona, the village where Abu Ali ibn Sina (Avicenna) was born; most of the district is Kyzylkum desert.
Peshku District was created in 1950, merged into Vobkent District in 1959 and restored in 1978. Its centre is the urban-type settlement of Yangibozor, about 29 km north of Bukhara. Local place-name scholars derive the name from peshi koʻy, 'the place on the great road'. The north of the district is Kyzylkum desert, where the Qoraqir ornithological sanctuary shelters waterbirds.
Officially it is the largest district in the region by area. Its best-known spot is Afshona, where the great scholar Abu Ali ibn Sina was born in 980; the village has a museum and a statue in his honour. The district lists 12 archaeological and 12 architectural monuments as well as the Khoja Peshku ensemble. On 1 January 2026 it had 135,800 residents.
