About the district

Qorakoʻl District was created in 1926. It borders Jondor to the north, Olot to the south-east, Romitan to the north-west and Turkmenistan's Lebap Province to the south and west. Its centre is the town of Qorakoʻl, and the Qorakoʻl oasis is one of the three main oases of the lower Zarafshan, about 55 km south-west of Bukhara.

The district's most famous monument is Paykend, the 'city of merchants' (Baykand in Arabic sources), part of the UNESCO Zarafshan-Karakum Corridor site since 2023. Bukhara Region is the centre of Uzbekistan's karakul sheep breeding and karakul pelt production — a trade whose very name comes from this oasis. Besides the town there are eight urban and more than 40 rural neighbourhood communities, where people grow cotton, grain and vegetables and keep cattle, sheep, goats and camels. On 1 January 2026 the district had 176,400 residents.
