Nadir Divan-Begi Khanqah

Built in 1619–1620 at the same time as the pool, the khanqah closes the west side of Lyab-i Hauz and now houses a branch of the Bukhara State Museum-Reserve.

History and architecture

Vizier Nadir Divan-Begi built the khanqah in 1619–1620, as the pool was being dug. It was meant as a lodge for Sufi dervishes and their devotions, and at times also served as a madrasa and as a mosque for travellers; the researcher A. Jumanazarov argues it began life as a Friday mosque.

A domed hall with a mihrab in its west wall sits at the heart of the many-roomed building behind its tall portal, with cells in the corners. It now holds the museum-reserve's Museum of Ancient Varakhsha and Applied Art.
