History

Akchakhan Kala is one of the largest and most complex sites of ancient Khorezm. Founded in the 4th–3rd centuries BCE and occupied until the 2nd century CE, it was then abandoned in favour of a new capital at Toprak Kala, 14 km to the northeast. Excavations continue. They have revealed a ceremonial complex with a hypostyle hall, column bases, stucco ornament, abundant murals of the 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE, unbaked-clay sculpture including fragments of a Hellenistic-style sea monster (ketos), and a Zoroastrian fire altar painted with colossal Avestan gods, with Parthian artistic influences noted by researchers.
