An experimental theatre founded in 1976 by director Mark Weil — the first non-state theatre in Soviet Uzbekistan.
Ilkhom was founded in 1976 by director Mark Weil and graduates of the Tashkent Theatre and Art Institute as an 'Experimental Studio of Theatre Youth'. It was the first independent theatre in Soviet Uzbekistan and one of the first professional non-state theatres in the USSR, starting out with 'Maskharaboz-76', a show in the street-theatre tradition.
Weil led the company until he was killed in September 2007; actor Boris Gafurov then became artistic director. Ilkhom has toured Europe and Asia, and its building is listed as cultural heritage.
