Mosque · Khiva
A mosque, madrasa and minaret built in 1830–1842 in Dishan Kala, just outside the Polvon Gate. Its mosque is reckoned the second largest in Khiva after the Juma Mosque.
The complex was paid for by Said Niyoz Sholikorboy, a wealthy merchant who made his money growing and trading rice in the reign of Allakuli Khan: first a mosque, built with the khan’s permission, then a madrasa and minaret beside it. The ensemble, about 33 by 32 metres, has two small courtyards, the mosque, the madrasa, an iwan and the minaret. The mosque, 24.4 by 21.2 metres and 12 metres high, is roofed by nine domes, the central one 4.8 metres across and resting on four columns. Although it lies outside the walls, the complex is included in the World Heritage property.
