Arab Muhammad Khan Madrasa
The first madrasa after the capital moved to Khiva
Madrasa · Khiva
A madrasa of 1785 founded by Muhammad Amin Inoq, forefather of Khiva’s Qongirat dynasty. Legend has it that he and his son are buried in one of its rooms.
Standing in the heart of Itchan Kala, the madrasa was built in 1785 by Muhammad Amin Inoq, the man from whom the Qongirat dynasty’s rule over the Khiva Khanate is traced. Tradition says he and his son were buried in a special room here, and when some Khivan buildings were demolished in 1935, workmen reported finding two graves inside. The madrasa has more than 20 cells and a two-storey façade with stairs on either side; a triple-domed vestibule leads into a 25.4-by-24-metre courtyard ringed by single-storey cells, with two iwans facing each other. It was placed under state protection in 2019.
