History

Several Christian churches were built in Skobelev (Fergana) during the Russian period, among them the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral of 1899. In the 1930s Fergana's Orthodox community lost both its churches, St Alexander Nevsky and St Nicholas the Wonderworker. In 1952 it was given a building that had previously belonged to the Lutherans; after repairs and remodelling it was consecrated that same year in the name of St Sergius of Radonezh. The three-tier iconostasis is a copy of the one in the Trinity Cathedral of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, made in 1952–1954 by the Moscow icon painter Maria Sokolova. The church belongs to the Tashkent and Uzbekistan Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church and is listed as a heritage site of national importance.
