Mosque · Margilan
An old mosque in central Margilan whose origins go back to the 16th century; its tall painted iwan and two minarets make it the city's principal Friday mosque.
The Khanaka (Khonakhan) Mosque stands in Margilan's historic centre, on the eastern part of the main street. It is counted among the oldest religious buildings to have survived the destructive earthquakes of the Fergana Valley: according to the sources it was founded in the 16th century and rebuilt several times over almost five centuries. Each period added its own elements, so the present building preserves parts from different ages. Its name refers to a khanqah, a lodge where Sufis gathered.
After independence the mosque was restored in several stages, and a major restoration began in 2018. Today the Khanaka is Margilan's main congregational mosque.
The mosque's finest feature is its tall painted iwan. The ceiling keeps its floral painting, and the beams show a delicate harmony of colours and decorative compositions — a vivid example of Fergana folk craftsmanship. The original carved wooden columns are still visible. Two minarets, each 26 metres high, stand out across the city centre.
Many of Margilan's mosques and mausoleums had to be rebuilt after earthquakes, which makes buildings with centuries of history, like the Khanaka, rare in the city. On Fridays worshippers come from all over town.
