Ahmad al-Farghani Park
A city park named after an astronomer
city · Fergana Region
The regional capital, founded in 1876 as New Margelan: broad avenues, shady streets, an international airport and a convenient base for exploring the valley.
Fergana lies in the south of the valley, about 15 km south-east of Margilan. The present city was founded in 1876, after the Khanate of Kokand was abolished, as a Russian military and administrative centre and was first called New Margelan. In 1907 it was renamed Skobelev after the region's first military governor, and in 1924 it became Fergana. That origin explains its grid plan, wide streets and shady avenues.
In the 20th century the city grew into a centre of oil refining, chemicals and textiles; today it is home to universities, theatres and the regional administration.
Ahmad al-Farghani Park in the centre is the townspeople's favourite promenade, with a memorial complex to the 9th-century astronomer. The regional museum of local lore, founded in 1894, covers the valley's history, archaeology and crafts. Russian-era buildings, including the Church of St Sergius of Radonezh, are also worth a look. The city makes a practical base for day trips to Margilan, Rishtan and Shohimardon.
