Location and landscape

Oltiariq District was formed in 1926. It borders Fergana District and Kyrgyzstan's Kadamjay District to the south, Namangan Region to the north, Rishtan, Buvayda and Bagdod districts to the west, and Qoshtepa and Yozyovon to the north-east. It covers about 630 km², and its centre is Oltiariq; the town of Tinchlik also belongs to the district.

The south is made up of adyr foothills 500–700 m high and the fans of mountain streams, while the north is a broad plain. The climate is dry and windy.

What it is known for

Near the village of Qapchigay archaeologists found a Palaeolithic stone-tool workshop, one of the oldest traces of people in the valley. The Zilkha state natural monument protects a stretch of foothill landscape. Oltiariq lies halfway between Fergana and Kokand, so it is easy to stop for a village market and a teahouse.
