Kumtepa Bazaar
A traditional valley market near Margilan
district · Fergana Region
North-west of Margilan, named after its many low hills and home to one of the valley's best-known markets, Kumtepa.
Qoshtepa District was formed in 1926 as Margilan District and took its present name in 1943; Toshloq and Yozyovon districts were later carved out of it. It borders Oltiariq to the west, Fergana District to the south, Yozyovon to the north, and Toshloq District and Margilan to the east. It covers about 390 km², and its centre is Langar.
'Qoshtepa' means 'twin hill', and many local names — Shahartepa, Oqtepa, Kumtepa, Qoratepa, Sopollitepa — refer to mounds.
Its best-known spot is Kumtepa Bazaar, a few kilometres from Margilan, where traders from across the valley traditionally gather at weekends, especially on Sundays, to sell ikat, skullcaps, livestock and fruit. Villages are full of orchards and mulberry groves, and silkworm rearing feeds directly into Margilan's silk industry.
