Yazyavan Natural Monument
Sand dunes at the heart of the valley
district · Fergana Region
Right in the middle of the Fergana Valley: dunes of the Yazyavan steppe, a natural monument that protects part of them, and reclaimed oases.
Yozyovon District was formed in 1952, merged with Toshloq District in 1959 and re-created at the end of 1980. It borders Toshloq, Qoshtepa, Oltiariq and Buvayda districts, Mingbuloq District of Namangan Region, and the Ulugnor and Boston districts of Andijan Region. It covers about 410 km², and its centre is the town of Yozyovon.
The district lies on the Yazyavan steppe: flat land sloping north, made of clay, loam and sand, with dunes in the north-west. Most of the desert was brought under irrigation in the 20th century.
To save part of the sandy desert, the Yazyavan natural monument was established across Yozyovon and Qoshtepa districts, preserving the original landscape of the valley floor — dunes, salt flats and desert plants. It is one of the least populated districts in the region, its villages scattered among wide fields.
