Bagdod District

A flat, fertile district in the centre of the region: villages along the Great Fergana Canal, orchards and the Kokand–Andijan railway.

Location and history

Bagdod District was created in 1926, merged into Uchkuprik District in 1962 and re-established at the end of 1964. It lies in the middle of the region, bordered by Rishtan District to the south, Oltiariq to the east, Buvayda to the north and Uchkuprik to the west. It covers about 333 km², and its centre is the town of Bagdod.

The land is almost entirely flat and is crossed by the Great Fergana Canal, which feeds the district's fields. Villages sit close together, each with its own guzar square, teahouse and mosque.

What it is known for

Bagdod is a classic farming district of the valley, growing cotton, grain and fruit and raising silkworms. The 19th-century poet Mukimi mentioned its villages in his satirical 'Travelogue' (Sayohatnoma), so the name is familiar to lovers of Uzbek literature. For travellers its appeal lies in the rural scenery on the road from Kokand to Rishtan and Fergana, neighbourhood mosques and roadside markets.
