Dangara District
North of Kokand: river terraces of the Syr Darya, sand dunes and open fields swept by the 'Kokand wind'.
Location and history
Dangara District was created in 1939 under the name Frunze, merged with Pop District in 1962 and re-formed in 1970. It borders Buvayda, Uchkuprik, Uzbekistan and Furqat districts, the city of Kokand, Pop District of Namangan Region and Tajikistan's Asht District. It covers about 450 km², and its centre is the town of Dangara.
The land is mostly flat: the south-west lies on the edge of the Sokh river fan, the north-west on the Syr Darya terraces, where sand dunes survive. The strong 'Kokand wind' blows in spring and autumn, and rainfall is low, around 110 mm a year.
What it is known for
Dangara is farming country irrigated from the Syr Darya by pumping stations, growing cotton, grain, melons and fruit. Closely tied to Kokand, it is an easy place to see rural life around the former khanate capital, and the riverside tugai woods and wide horizons appeal to photographers.
