Location and history

Kuvasay lies about 22 km south-east of Fergana city at the foot of the Alay Range, bordering Fergana city, Quva and Fergana districts, and Kyrgyzstan. It grew up in the mid-20th century as an industrial settlement beside deposits of limestone, gypsum and clay, and has held the status of a city of regional subordination since 1986. Several foothill villages also fall within the city limits, so its territory is much larger than the built-up town suggests.

Its population is mixed, with Tajik, Kyrgyz and Russian communities living alongside Uzbeks.

What it is known for

Kuvasay produces cement, glass, porcelain and bricks, and has a railway station and a large bazaar. For travellers it is above all a quiet town in foothill country, not far from the road from Fergana towards Shohimardon. The youth park and the 'Grieving Mother' war memorial form the centre of town life.
