Furqat District

Created in 1992 and named after the Kokand poet Zokirjon Furqat: plains and sands along the Tajik border.

Location and history

Furqat District was carved out of Beshariq and Uzbekistan districts on 9 April 1992, making it the youngest in the region. It borders Tajikistan and Dangara District to the north, Beshariq to the west and Uzbekistan District to the south and east. It covers about 300 km², and its administrative centre is Navbahor.

The district belongs to Central Fergana, with lowland, low hills and sandy patches under a sharply continental climate.

What it is known for

It is named after Zokirjon Furqat (1859–1909), a Kokand poet and enlightener whose verse and letters from Kashgar and Yarkand hold a special place in Uzbek literature. The Tashkent–Andijan railway and the Fergana–Osh road run through the district. Most residents live in villages and work in irrigated farming.
