Beshariq District

On the western edge of the region: the Tajik border, sandy wastes near the Kayrakkum Reservoir and oases watered by the Great Fergana Canal.

Location and landscape

Beshariq District was formed in 1926 and lies in the west of the region. It borders Uzbekistan and Furqat districts as well as the Konibodom and Asht districts of Tajikistan. It covers about 770 km², and its centre is the town of Beshariq.

The terrain mixes lowland, low hills and sandy semi-desert, with dunes in the south-west. The Syr Darya flows to the north, the Isfara to the south, and the Kayrakkum Reservoir lies to the west. Strong westerly winds blow in spring, and farming depends entirely on irrigation.

What it is known for

This is farming country, where water from the Great Fergana Canal grows cotton, grain and fruit. Roads entering the valley from the west run through Beshariq, making it a transit zone between Kokand and Tajikistan. For travellers it is a little-visited corner of the valley where desert gives way to oasis.
