Uzbekistan District

The south-west of the region, centred on the town of Yaypan, bordering Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, with oases watered by the Sokh river.

Location and history

Uzbekistan District was formed in 1926, abolished in 1962 and restored in 1963. It borders Kokand and Furqat District to the north, Tajikistan to the south and west, Beshariq to the north-west, Uchkuprik to the east, and Rishtan District and Kyrgyzstan to the south-east. It covers about 690 km², and its centre is the town of Yaypan.

The land slopes from the northern foothills of the Turkestan Range down towards the Syr Darya, its northern part continuing the Central Fergana desert. There are deposits of ozokerite, gas, oil and limestone, and farms draw on the Sokh river.

What it is known for

Ancient sites survive here: the Muyi Muborak mound in the Ovchi neighbourhood is state-protected and managed by the Kokand Museum-Reserve. Yaypan is one of the trading towns of the western valley, and its bazaar serves the surrounding villages. In spring the foothills to the south turn green.
