Toshloq District

A densely populated, flat district in the east of the region, between Margilan and Kuva on the Andijan border — a land of orchards and fields.

Location and history

Toshloq District was formed in 1935, absorbed into Okhunboboyev District in 1959 and re-created on 12 April 1973. It borders Margilan to the west, Qoshtepa and Yozyovon districts to the north-west, Quva to the east, the city of Kuvasay to the south-east and Boz District of Andijan Region to the north-east. It covers about 240 km², and its centre is the town of Toshloq.

The land is mostly flat, sloping from south to north towards the deserts of Central Fergana, with sands in the west. The district has more than 50 mahalla citizens' assemblies.

What it is known for

Toshloq is one of the valley's traditional farming districts, growing cotton, grain, vegetables, fruit and mulberries, with silkworm rearing supplying Margilan's weavers. The farmers' market in the district centre is the hub of local trade, and the road from Fergana to Kuva and Andijan passes through, making rural life easy to glimpse on the way.
