Jome Complex, Andijan
The tallest minaret in the Fergana Valley
city · Andijan Region
The regional capital in the east of the Fergana Valley, birthplace of Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur, known for the Jome complex and Babur National Park.
Andijan lies in the south-east of the Fergana Valley, close to the Kyrgyz border. Written sources mention it as Andukan from the 9th century; under the Timurids it was the capital of the Fergana domain, and Babur was born here in 1483. The city later passed to the Kokand Khanate and in 1876 to the Russian Empire.
In 1898 Andijan saw an anti-colonial uprising led by Dukchi Ishan, and the railway arrived in 1899. The earthquake of December 1902 all but destroyed the old city, killing more than 4,600 people. Andijan has been a regional capital since 1941 and is today a major industrial, educational and trading city, home to Andijan State University and a medical institute. In 2025 the newly built town of Yangi Andijan in the region was renamed Bobur.
The old centre has the late 19th-century Jome complex with its 32-metre minaret, the Babur House Museum in the Ark-ichi madrasa and the regional Museum of History and Culture. To the south-east, Babur National Park spreads across the Bogishamol hills.
