Then and now

Once Andijan became part of the Russian Empire in 1876, the city needed a fortified base for its garrison. The Kal'a complex was built as a military fortress in 1880–1881 and is now a protected architectural monument.

It houses the fine art department of the regional museum, with 103 works by 20th-century Uzbek painters including Malik Nabiyev and Khasan Saidov. In May 1898 rebels led by Dukchi Ishan attacked Andijan's Russian garrison, and the mahalla around the complex now bears his name.
