History

The shrine stands in the foothill village of Imom Ota in the south of Khojaobod District. Local tradition links it with Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya, a son of Caliph Ali, said to have spread Islam in Khorasan. Historians, however, record that he died in Arabia, so the tomb is a place of veneration rather than an actual grave.

The building dates from the 18th century and was repaired in the late 19th. It was listed as an architectural monument in 1982 and added to the national heritage register in 2019.
