History

Qutayba ibn Muslim al-Bahili became governor of Khorasan in 704–705, took Bukhara in 709 and Samarkand and Khwarazm in 712, then campaigned in Shash and Fergana. He was killed in Fergana in 715 during a mutiny of his own troops. Local tradition places his grave here, though the historical sources do not name the spot.

Glazed tile fragments and fired bricks found around the shrine date from the 10th–13th and 14th–15th centuries, pointing to a substantial building in Qarakhanid and Timurid times. The mausoleum was demolished in 1935–1936; today the site is a protected heritage monument.
