Izboskan District

A district in the north of the region centred on the town of Poytug, with the Mailisoy hills to the north and the Kara Darya to the south, bordering Namangan Region and Kyrgyzstan.

Overview

Izboskan District was formed on 29 September 1926. Its centre is the town of Poytug, and it also includes the small town of Tortkol and dozens of villages. It borders four Andijan districts, Namangan Region and Kyrgyzstan.

The land is a lowland sloping to the south-west, rising to the Mailisoy hills in the north. The Great Fergana Canal, the Kara Darya, the Mailisoy and the Tentaksoy cross the district; annual rainfall is 300–500 mm and the growing season lasts 240–255 days. Almost all the inhabitants are Uzbeks.

A folk tale explains the name: Amir Temur's soldiers are said to have won a battle in the riverside thickets here and 'left their footprints' (iz boskan). There is no historical evidence for it, but the legend is popular locally. The Poytug Aziz shrine in Poytug is one of the district's protected holy sites.
