Baliqchi District
A flat district in the north-west of the region, with villages along the Kara Darya, the Mazgilsoy and the Great Andijan Canal, and fields of cotton and grain.
Overview
Baliqchi District was formed on 29 September 1926 in the north-west of the region. It borders Namangan Region's Norin District and five districts of Andijan Region. Its centre is the town of Baliqchi, and it also includes the small town of Chinobod.
The land is flat, crossed by the Kara Darya, the Mazgilsoy, the Chinobodsoy and the Great Andijan Canal. With a growing season of about 235 days, the climate suits cotton and grain. Storks, ducks and other birds live in the riverside thickets, and the district's name, meaning 'fisherman', probably recalls an old fishing tradition.
The Sufi Ota shrine in Guliston village, popular with local pilgrims, was added to the national heritage register in 2019.
