Pakhtaobod District

A north-eastern district on the Kyrgyz border, known for the Otaquzi madrasa and the house museum of the poet Zokirjon Habibiy.

Overview

Pakhtaobod District was formed on 29 September 1926 and was part of Izboskan District from 1962 to 1970. Its centre is the town of Pakhtaobod. It borders Kyrgyzstan's Jalal-Abad Region to the north and north-east, and the Izboskan, Andijan and Jalaquduq districts.

The district lies on a plateau between the Naryn and the Kara Darya that rises from west to east, crossed by the Kara Darya, the Tentaksoy and the Mailisoy. With more than 830 people per square kilometre, it lives mainly from cotton, grain and orchards.

Worth seeing

The early 20th-century madrasa built by the merchant Otaquzi is admired for its patterned brickwork and painted mosque ceiling and has housed a local museum since the 1970s. The district also has the house museum of the People's Poet Zokirjon Habibiy, the Khovuskon Ota shrine and the archaeological mounds of Qayirtepa and Qoshtepa.
