The shrine of Fergana's 'supreme patron'
Nature · Yozyovon District
A patch of sandy desert preserved in the very middle of the Fergana Valley — dunes, salt flats and desert plants that once covered the valley floor.
The Yazyavan natural monument protects a desert landscape across Yozyovon and Qoshtepa districts. It was created in the early 1990s to save part of the Yazyavan steppe; sources cite both 1991 and a decision of the regional governor dated 23 May 1994. During the 20th century most of the sandy desert of Central Fergana was turned into irrigated farmland, which makes this one of the few places where you can still see the valley's original landscape — barchan dunes, hummocky sands, salt flats and desert vegetation. Saltwort, camelthorn, reeds and tamarisk grow here, alongside lizards and other desert creatures.
