The story of the Hungry Steppe under one roof
Culture & arts · Gulistan
A regional theatre founded in 1974, based since 1984 in a 730-seat building in central Gulistan and staging everything from Shakespeare to Hamza.
The theatre was founded in 1974 and opened its first season in 1975 with Love by Abdulla Qahhor. Its company was formed mainly from graduates of the Institute of Theatre and Fine Arts. In 1977 it was named after the statesman Alim Khojaev, and in 1984 it moved into a new 730-seat building with a main and a small auditorium.
Its repertoire has ranged from world classics — Shakespeare’s Richard III and King Lear, Molière and Chekhov — to Uzbek plays by Hamza, Abdulla Qahhor and Gafur Gulyam’s The Naughty Boy.
