History

The site was chosen after a five-year search, and the foundation stone was laid in May 1981. The centrepiece is the RT-70, a radio telescope with a 70-metre dish designed for millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths. Construction stopped when the USSR collapsed; in 1995 Uzbekistan and Russia agreed to finish it together, work resumed in 2007, and in 2018 the two sides agreed to complete it as an international observatory.

Sources expected first observations in 2023–2028. The huge structure stands not far from the Zomin tourist zone.
