History

The madrasa stands in northern Itchan Kala near the Bogcha Gate, opposite the Hasanmurod Qushbegi Mosque. Amir Tora, brother of Muhammad Rahim Khan II, built it in 1870 or 1872, according to different sources. Construction is said to have coincided with the khan’s own madrasa, leaving Amir Tora short of bricks and skilled builders, so he brought in craftsmen from Turtkul and Shorakhon. The courtyard is tiled but the façade was left bare, possibly because of the Russian campaign of 1873. Restored in two stages in 2017–2019, it now houses the Khiva School of Restoration, where craftsmen train and visitors can watch conservation in progress.
